Iowa DNR hired LT Leon Associates to investigate current conditions and the future of the Steamboat Rock Dam and surrounding segments the Iowa River. Initial project goals include: 

• Determining whether hazards inherent to low-head dams can be reduced through a project
• Studying whether frequent flooding at Pine Ridge Park can be reduced 
• Show whether fisheries and other life in the river could benefit if the dam is modified
• Document the values of the dam, including its history, and determine whether it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
• Develop mitigation alternatives and discuss scenarios with the public, the City of Steamboat Rock, and Hardin County Conservation, and other partners
• Assemble decision-making information for Iowa DNR to select a path forward based on the best information, costs versus benefits, and community energy
