Iowa DNR hired LT Leon Associates to investigate current conditions and the future of the Steamboat Rock Dam and surrounding segments the Iowa River. Initial project goals include:
Determining whether hazards inherent to low-head dams can be reduced through a project
Studying whether frequent flooding at Pine Ridge Park can be reduced
Show whether fisheries and other life in the river could benefit if the dam is modified
Document the values of the dam, including its history, and determine whether it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
Develop mitigation alternatives and discuss scenarios with the public, the City of Steamboat Rock, and Hardin County Conservation, and other partners
Assemble decision-making information for Iowa DNR to select a path forward based on the best information, costs versus benefits, and community energy
